Think about the room before choosing lilies

Lilies make their presence felt through broad flowers, tall stems and, in some varieties, a pronounced fragrance. Before sending them to a Phuket hotel or home, consider the recipient’s preferences and the space available. A scent that someone enjoys in a large room may be unwelcome beside a bed or dining place.

Ask about the actual variety rather than judging fragrance by colour. White and pink are not scent categories. If a light fragrance is essential, say so before the composition is agreed. Ventilation is not a substitute for choosing flowers the recipient will be comfortable living with.

Allow space for the open flowers

Several buds can share one stem, so stem count and flower count are different measures. The bouquet’s outline can expand as buds open. Compare its current stage and expected shape rather than assuming a photograph of fully open lilies shows exactly how it will look on arrival.

For a ceremony or a photograph at a set time, discuss the opening stage when selecting the flowers. Each bud develops at its own pace. A request for a fully open appearance is more useful than expecting closed buds to reach it during the journey.

A tall arrangement needs a stable vase and clearance from curtains and passing guests. For a dining table, a lower composition may be easier to place. In wedding bouquets, the way the flowers sit in the hand and interact with clothing also matters.

Check whether the recipient has a cat

True lilies are highly toxic to cats, including their leaves, flowers, pollen and vase water. Choose a different composition for a home with cats and check all its ingredients. Removing pollen does not make lilies safe. If a cat may have swallowed any part, licked pollen or drunk the vase water, contact a veterinarian immediately.

Enjoy the changing bouquet without crowding it

A lily stem can carry both open flowers and developing buds. Leave room for those buds to unfold instead of pressing the stems into a narrow vase or placing the heads against a wall. In a mixed arrangement, the lilies’ broad shapes should have space among the surrounding flowers.

For loose stems, use a clean vase, recut the ends with a clean, sharp tool and remove submerged foliage. Add flower food according to its packet and keep the water replenished. Position the bouquet away from direct sun, strong draughts and ripening fruit.

Keep pollen clear of clothing and furniture

Ordinary lily pollen can stain fabric. Place the flowers so that open blooms do not brush a tablecloth or upholstery, and ask the florist about preparation and care of newly opening buds. Some varieties have no pollen, but that feature needs to be confirmed for the specific flowers and says nothing about their safety around cats.

As individual flowers fade, handle the stem carefully so the remaining buds are not broken. For lilies fixed in a floral base, follow instructions for that arrangement rather than pulling stems out for routine recutting. Its water access may differ from a vase.

Compare prices through the agreed composition: number of stems, developed buds, variety, other flowers and presentation. A tall stem and a compact one do not necessarily contribute the same visible volume. Confirm the complete total including delivery to the recipient’s address.

If the gift will be presented outdoors, keep its time away from suitable conditions brief and arrange where it will stand afterwards. A bouquet left in a parked car before dinner may suffer regardless of how striking it looked when collected.
