Choose the silhouette before choosing a number

A huge bouquet can be a broad dome of roses, an open arrangement with reaching stems or a large basket that stays on its base. These shapes occupy a room differently. A wide dome gives a concentrated area of colour; an open outline draws attention to individual flowers and the spaces between them. Neither can be described fully by stem count.

Bloom size matters too. A tightly closed rose and a broad open flower contribute different amounts of visible colour. Length adds height, while wrapping can make the outer edge wider without adding flowers. Ask for the approximate finished dimensions of the floral part as well as the complete wrapped gift.

When the number is part of the message

If you specifically want 101 roses, keep that count in the agreed composition and consider variety, shade and shape separately. A reference photograph does not establish an exact diameter for every bouquet with the same number of stems.

For a gift intended to look expansive, explain the visual result you want instead. The florist can then discuss which available flowers and assembly suit it. This also makes substitutions easier to judge: replacing one flower with another of the same colour may still change the scale of the finished work.

Look at the arrangement from the angle at which it will be seen. A bouquet held for a photograph, a basket standing beside a sofa and a display on a tall console do not need the same outline. The best reference is one that shows both the flowers and their intended position.

A large gift needs somewhere to arrive

Before sending a huge bouquet to a Phuket hotel, establish where it will be accepted and where it will eventually stand. A lobby handover and a surprise inside a room are separate arrangements. Give the property’s full name, the relevant building or villa details and a contact who can receive the delivery.

For a restaurant celebration, a clear space beside the table can be more useful than placing a large arrangement among the dishes. A bouquet should not prevent guests from seeing one another. If staff will hold it until a particular moment, agree that with the venue rather than assuming storage and presentation are included.

On a villa terrace, think beyond the photograph. The flowers will need a stable surface and care after the guests move indoors. For a beach handover, keep the outdoor interval short and arrange who will carry the gift back. Do not leave it waiting in a parked car while the rest of the event is prepared.

Consider the journey after the surprise

A recipient leaving for another hotel or an excursion may have little room for a large gift. Check the finished width against the transport available and allow it to travel in the position required by its construction. Choosing a delivery time after that journey may make the flowers much easier to enjoy.

Where a suitable vase is unlikely to be available, flowers in a basket offer another format to consider. Check the actual internal base and watering instructions. A container changes how the arrangement is placed and cared for; it does not remove the need for water.

Keep the colour, scale and practical details in one brief

Describe the part of the gift that must remain unchanged. It might be a single flower type, an exact count, a particular shade or a broad shape. If all are essential, say so before considering alternatives. If the overall effect matters most, the composition may have more flexibility than a fixed list of stems.

For a very large mixed arrangement, a short palette can help the flowers read as one work. Smaller blooms can connect larger shapes, while foliage can soften the outline. Adding more varieties is not automatically an improvement; each should have a visible purpose in the composition.

Review what the total includes: flowers, base or wrapping, any agreed additions and delivery. Compare like with like. Two gifts with similar outer dimensions can contain quite different amounts of flowers, and an elaborate base may account for part of the price.

After the flowers are in place

For a bouquet on stems, use a clean, stable vase with a neck wide enough for the bundle. Keep foliage out of the water and follow the supplied care instructions. For flowers arranged in a base, ask where and how to add water without dismantling the design.

Support a large arrangement underneath when moving it. Decorative ribbons and handles should not be treated as lifting points unless their use has been confirmed. Choose a position away from direct sun and leave enough room to reach the water.
