Allow for the size of an open lily
A bouquet with several closed buds can become much wider as the flowers open. Think about the space around the vase, not just the narrow shape the stems may have on delivery. A tall arrangement also needs a stable container and enough room above it.
Check whether the quantity in a composition refers to stems. One lily stem can carry several flowers and buds, so five stems do not necessarily mean five blooms. If the flowers are for an event today, explain how open you want them to look and ask what can be provided.
For a table at a Bangkok restaurant, discuss the finished height with the venue as well as the florist. A large flower can be admired without placing it directly between people trying to talk across the table.
Ask about fragrance before choosing for an enclosed room
The strength of a lily's scent depends on its type and variety. A photograph cannot answer that question, and white petals are not evidence that a lily has no fragrance. For a bedroom, office or shared room, consider the preferences of everyone using the space.
If the recipient enjoys fragrant flowers, that can be part of the appeal. If you do not know, ask before arranging a surprise. You can also browse rose bouquets for a different flower shape, while checking fragrance for the particular variety there too.
Choose the flower for the person and setting rather than assigning it an automatic ceremonial meaning. The card and the way you present the gift can explain the occasion more clearly than a supposed universal colour code.
Choose different flowers for a home with cats
True lilies in the genus Lilium are highly toxic to cats. The danger includes pollen, other parts of the plant and water from the vase. Removing the pollen does not make the flowers safe. Do not send lilies to a household with a cat, including lilies within a mixed bouquet.
Tell the team about pets when discussing an alternative and check the whole composition. Other flowers should not be assumed safe without checking. If a cat may have swallowed lily material, pollen or vase water, seek veterinary help immediately.
Protect the petals and the surface around the vase
Lily pollen can stain fabric. Keep open flowers away from clothing and curtains, and discuss anther removal with the florist if this is relevant to the gift. Avoid rubbing loose pollen into fabric.
Use a clean vase, remove submerged foliage and trim the stem ends before placing the flowers in water. Follow any supplied flower food instructions. Leave the blooms room to open without pressing against a wall or one another.
Check the water level and keep the bouquet out of direct sun and the strong airflow from an air conditioner. Its appearance will change as buds develop; the timing depends on the flowers and their surroundings rather than a fixed promise for every bouquet.
